HBO Voyeurism (2017)

ι  Exploring the viewers' activity, 'watching,' intimately infuses the strangeness within the mind of, preferably, watchers. HBO aims to inverse its audience's profound engagement in watching the channel into something else that remains the feeling of straightforward familiarity but, strange. The watchers "become [a] voyeurs."1Anyone who sees through the revealed apartment walls are given the role of the ones who straightforwardly participate in perceiving the show or in sitting in the theatre.
ι    The filming lets the viewers see "what [storie] they weren't meant to see."2
ι    Functionally, this video allows the audience to "do more than just watch,

"zoom in and out, slyly moving from window to window, ..., pause to review scenes or change the soundtrack"3

The close frame technique shows that there are several running scenes but, only in a stationary camera position. The fixated view helps to contextualize the tonal asset, building the intelligible story development. Hence, it is easy to

"8 stories" are the put-together scenes which show that the ordinary lives are actually extraordinary,4 even though they might be "seamless"5

UNIT 4 - Parasite (2019)

Image result for Allstar/Curzon Artificial Eye parasite

A captured scene in Parasite movie by Allstar/Curzon Artificial Eye

“A minimalist space makes you feel that all you see is all there is. To see that, you get the sense that it's not trying to hide anything beneath the complicated layers. The simple planes and the lines come together to make you feel like you've seen everything. And that's why when you see the man in the bunker and the hidden parts of the house, it's more shocking for the audience because you assume that you have seen everything and nothing is hidden.”1

Bong Joon Ho (Parasite director)

levels.jpg.2

"The general concept that penetrates the film is verticality; it descends endlessly from top to bottom. The Park house has the same structure. As you can see from the semi-basement, which is a room you enter when you descend from the ground floor, all the layers in the film exist vertically. The numerous stairs and the density of the space shifts as you descend. There are a lot of layers in Parasite."2

Lee Ha-jun (Production designer)

Verticality: (in the film) the layering context of rich-poor levels in positioning the characters and the settings indicates the system that exploits the lower class and reinforces the better life for the higher class

In the flood scene, the descending motif becomes so clear that the audience can sense the struggles of the poor family who needs to escape and survive from the the nature of unfairness and exploitation; because the rich live at the upper level of land and status

This technique creates a projection that structures the pace and depicts class-discrimination. The moving-up-and-down camera emerges a gap without notice in the first half of the play. It continues to divide the two classes and surface at the peak moment.

parasite-poster.jpg

As line and plane have portrayed the class division on screen, this poster created by Curzon Artificial Eye interprets the levels using nine prominent set designs based on the film. In the movie, the visual language already alludes to the separation between two classes, whereas, in this scenario, the creator utilizes the line-plane technique to connect these scenes and portray the quietened, suppressed concealing of the poor who always live as ghosts haunting the wealthy house. In other words, we (social classes) all live under the same roof (society) - but the ghosts (lower class) are inconspicuous.

One-Sentence-Evaluation: Ghosts don't own physiques and so the poor, not having sympathetical existence in society.

Makoko Floating School (2012-13) by NLÉ Team

Educationally, this floating school has succeeded in moderately closing the gap between the learning environment and the community-based living on the water
It historically appreciates the water community, Lagos, the biggest lagoon city in Nigeria: it cares for the effect of demanding change and African urbanization1

The social and physical needs are dissatisfied and hard to cope with even in the adequate level

"But, Makoko is very poor. Houses, sleeping several families in single rooms, share common latrines discharging raw effluence into rubbish-strewn waterways. Cholera and malaria are rife, while polio, still very much at large throughout Nigeria, strikes children at random. Medicine is largely traditional. Outlaws from along the west coast hide out here. Life expectancy is under 40."

The architect says that he wants "to bridge critical gaps in infrastructure and urban development by creating coherent networks and global exchanges that work for people"2 which also refers to the inability that has been long established in Nigeria
Geographically, there is an environmental concern involved: "water level rising; flood; and swelling tides and swift current." The waterfront community renews its culture near the coastal zones

Social context: the Baan Nong Bua school buildings were severely ruined by the earthquake in 2014 and 2000 students were left with no classrooms
To build the most suitable and sustainable local school
The regional area of Pan District, Chiang Rai, in Thailand, makes a proper notice on the construction and materials: bamboo, wood, and steel which are all locals and easy to find. Additionally, the cement board, metal sheet or polycarbonate sheet were utilized to faster the project

New City by Greg Lynn

Giving the idea of the extraterrestrial discourse and scape that it gave off the strange view of seeing the futuristic architecture in the space * but, in the version of another realm or "ark."

*  space in which, he means the intimately dark outer space that humanity becomes closer with, due to the interests in science and the advanced technology - physically, it is distant and very unfamiliar

Regardless of the territorial bonds, geological location, and the ground, the work emerges the invent-habitant plate. It generates the imaginary sentiment which indicates the new world, surreal immigration, alienation.

"The extraterrestrial quality is also something that I think is a very big deal. That’s a strangeness of something that is not of this world, but is so adjacent that it feels neutral.”

Urban Evening (2017), from Industry Series, acrylic on wood panel, by Cinta Vidal (Artist and illustrator)

The non-gravitational motif in every portrayed work by the artist enacts the made-up world ark. She conveys "how the perspective of an individual may not be, as it seems with its surrounding environments."1Surrealistically, the anonymous urban habitats are isolated among themselves by being on the different-facing planes attached and at the irregular position of houses' bodies. It is a sense of detaching the connection between them that makes the painting more emotionally separated or solitary.

The relation under the central theme rather be its chain of discipline (inequality) is hide-and-seek configuration and sentimentality
The pivoting function implicates the motion that generates playfully flexible space that also plays with the alignment. The canvas alters the dynamics of what the children own and vice versa, which disperses all over the playground area.
I am personally interested in the kinetic adaptability that has small numbers of rules which simplify the playground system and let the children play with the rules

This synesthetic reality experiment that makes us learn and appreciate the momentary scenario of the city setting. The relation between historical moments played itself with moving structure which defines a space. It is mechanic, mathematic, dynamic, and hallucinating - in its technological mind and body (on screen). The effect is powerful enough to change the entire space and make the audiences feel like they journey to the new and unexpected even though they only sit and watch the performance going on.

Transparency Report - David Springgs-01-01.jpg

'Transparency Report' (2014) by David Spriggs

In this context, David has given the forming emphasis on the transparent imagery into an optically forming dusty-

“Spriggs’ work invites us to see-with what is not actually there and to move-with the constellation of what we’re beginning to see. Moving-with perception composing itself, we experience the dynamics of an object becoming spacetime. We no longer simply observe – we are moved by the experience of watching, and we move with it. We note the contours but feel the colours. We see the lines but feel the rhythm. We see-with becoming-work. This is the activity of plastic dynamism expressing itself through the emergence of a body-image constellation.”

Erin Manning. ‘Relationscapes: Movement, Art, Philosophy’ MIT Press

The secondary viewpoint touches upon the unseeing, anonymous, and disguised visual imagery and this sightful visualization. Bridging the images of each layer, both the concrete glasses and meanings, solidified the 'transparency.'

UNIT 4 - Divided Nation

Image

The shot megaphone from the scene (1976), Thammasat University massacre

The accidental art during the firing in the massacre incident depicts the voices that were forced to fall silent1
Historically, the first coup d'etat was 44 years ago (1976) but, it is still reminiscent and has transpired over this past decade. Crucially, this historical context informs the consequent scenarios: economic collapse, social instability, constitutional conspiracy, and the deprivation of rights

The significant reason hidden here is also the connection  within the coups and other associations

"This rise in well-being has also brought dissatisfaction with the glaring gulfs between rich and poor. As a result, Thai society has been undergoing a historic realignment in which the poorer classes, encouraged by ambitious politicians, have been seeking their share of the prosperity and clout that have always been beyond their reach. An alliance of Thailand’s old political institutions—with the palace, the bureaucracy, the judiciary, and the military at their core—has been pushing back, defending the privileges of a hierarchical system that governs both public and private life."2

This portrayal conveys the sound that went unheard influenced by the ancient right-wing government who handed the reins to its generation. Several left-wing sides could take over the governmental power and be selected from the democratic votes but, the idea of coup always returns when the militias or the elites felt dissatisfied with the leftists

Sound sculpture installation: 32 prepared dc-motors, 230 light tubes, 307 cardboard boxes 105x105x105cm (2013) by Hannes Zweifel + Zimoun

"Using simple and functional components, Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun’s minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates."1

The "architecturally-minded" exposition describes the rhythm in sound of flow in a built system which actively externalizes the mobile part of the architectural order
This platforms create a uniquely quiet resonance that repeats ceaselessly. This reverberating wind sound has a constant pace and a fast dynamic which strangely peaceful and harmonious
There is wind that hits the suspended boxes and passes through the narrow openings, naturally creates the howling and the stroking the cardboards

My Inorganic Heart

Definitively, the work imparts the sides of a heart, prearranged geometric forms, perceivably changing when the whole body turns to other front position
With the simple function, the designed system of each positioned object is subtle enough to inwardly unfold the alternation and shift the perception from one to the others
